I’ve finished my Spring semester in college [whew, insane!]. I’m currently writing a visual novel, so updates will be on hold (ha ha.) until the end of May.

Update to Crunchyroll Reverse Engineering post

I got a comment from HorribleSubs, which mentions that Crunchyroll has finally wised up and no longer decrypts the whole subtitle file in memory. The player decrypts the subtitles line by line (or something like that) from a complete copy of the encrypted subtitle file. Therefore, the method I describe earlier, memory dumping, won’t work because the subtitle file is never fully decrypted in memory.

The fact that the encrypted subtitle file sits in memory is interesting, because it means that the subtitle file can STILL be dumped immediately — with a hacked player. You would need to know ActionScript 3, decompile the SWF file, then insert your own function that uses their decrypter to dump the entire encrypted subtitle file. This might be a gross simplification, but the general idea is correct.

I’m just wondering how much time it’s going to be before Crunchyroll starts streaming the subtitles. Then, the subtitle file will have to be dumped realtime, which is a pain in the butt. They might even strip out the timestamps if they stream the subtitles.

Too bad I don’t have any more time to play around with CR’s media player. Work, panel, college, etc…

CLANNAD After Story 16-18

I bawwed like this in episode 16 and 18.

I don’t usually blog anime, apparently. So to shake things up a bit, I’m going to blog about anime.

Even though I have been rather unimpressed with most of the CLANNAD After Story anime (Misae’s arc being the exception, Shima <3), the past few episodes, which cover Nagisa’s arc, have been amazing.

As I haven’t been able to play After Story on my copy of CLANNAD, it’s my first time experiencing After Story. (for those less informed, After Story in CLANNAD’s visual novel is only Nagisa’s arc in the After Story anime. It’s playable once all other endings are first achieved.)

In particular, I have been moved to tears by episodes 16 and 18 (spoilers after the skip) where Nagisa dies (in episode 16, NAGISAAAAAAAA~~! Nooooo) and Tomoya’s grandmother talks about Tomoya’s father trying his best for Tomoya’s sake (in episode 18). Actually, in episode 18, I cried three times: the second time when Ushio calls Tomoya “papa” and cries in his arms – accepting Tomoya as her father (also demonstrating that Tomoya finally accepts Ushio as his daughter), and the third time when Tomoya talks about “Ushio’s mom” – and cries – because he reminisces about Nagisa and realizes that she is still absolutely dear to him. *tears up while typing this*

On another note, I felt tense but not irritated during episode 17 (opposite of what was probably intended: it is supposed to be an easygoing episode, though the viewer is supposed to feel irritated at asshole-mode Tomoya). After watching it, I saw the episode as a “breather” between emotional episodes, because I was still feeling really sad about Nagisa’s death. That’s what I get for marathoning these last few episodes, but I certainly don’t regret it; in fact, I think the emotional impact is much stronger watching the episodes back to back. I actually don’t really know why I stopped watching CLANNAD After Story. I think I temporarily lost interest in anime after “ugh-ing” several mediocre episodes, so I forgot just how good it could be.

P.S. Needs moar Nagisa. Me want her back!

I mentioned that you could convert the XML file into an ASS using MS Word. I wasn’t actually completely certain it could be done, but after about 30 minutes of hacking/messing around, I succeeded.

I got tired of getting emails (from comments) from people who wanted to know how to get the softsubs out of Crunchyroll’s video player. So due to sufficient interest, I’ve decided to turn release the ‘how-to’ guide for dumping Crunchyroll’s subtitles public. Note that this bypasses the decryption step because it uses Crunchyroll’s video player to do it for you.
Please note that the information in this post is to be used only for legal, educational and personal use. I have no responsibility of what happens to you, however you decide to use this information.

EDIT: fixed images and broke the page layout. Oh well.

You’ll want the PhantOm plugin for OllyDbg, and make sure you check the “custom exception handler” option. Otherwise, OllyDbg will break on memory exceptions that Flash will trigger, making your debugging session take forever (Ctrl+F9 to get past the breakpoints).

How to get the pesky soft subtitles from Crunchyroll’s
media player!

Prerequisites

You need OllyDbg (I used version 1.1). The “Phant0m” title is because I use a debugger hider (I’ve
cracked older versions of Themida before…); it should not be necessary for what we are doing today (also, it doesn’t seem to work with OllyDbg 2.0). You can also use another debugger; but OllyDbg is badass and free.

You may want a hex capable calculator (ie. calc.exe), if you can’t do math in your head. But you don’t actually need to do any math if you’re lazy.

You may also want to have some scratch paper or notepad.exe open.

Dumping 101

1. Start OllyDbg.

2. Use the Open feature to select the executable you want to run debugged. I suggest Internet Explorer because it can be run multi-instance and is well supported.

3. The program will be loaded in a minimal running state: the beginning of the program.

4. Click the “play” button and wait for IE to load up.

5. Go find your favorite episode. Make sure softsubs actually show up. (yeah… the picture doesn’t show them~)

Note: don’t do other things with the browser, like view multiple videos etc. because you will have to sift through more memory to find what you are looking for. It gets confusing if multiple subtitles are loaded in memory; which one is for which video, then?

6. Go back to OllyDbg and click the Pause button. IE will stop responding; this makes sense because it’s not running anymore.

7. Go to OllyDbg’s memory map.

8. Press (Ctrl+B) to Search for “UNICODE. Adobe ActionScript 3 uses unicode strings, so you need to use the proper search.

9. Found it! Note the subtitle starting address (04458018 ) and the base address of the dump (04000000). The offset can be calculated by subtracting the subtitle starting address from the base address: 00458018. The dump file, at the offset, contains the subtitle exactly as you see it here.

If you do calculate the offset here, you ought to search for “unicode) as well. Find the offset that corresponds to the end of the “” tag. Be sure to include the extra space after the “>” so that it remains valid unicode.

10. Right click and dump the “backup” to _whatever.mem which is the block of memory of interest. This file should be between 2MB and 16MB in size. The subtitle (and probably, encryption key etc.) is buried inside the memory dump.

Done. This ends the dumping portion of the walkthrough. You’ll need to do some more work to get the subtitle out of the .mem file.

Next steps:

Open the .mem file in a hex editor. If you calculated the offset earlier, open a hex editor and jump to the offset; you’ll find the tag right there. If not, search for for “in UNICODE.

You’ll need to find the end of the subtitle as well. Search for “

Dump the text between the and tags, inclusive, and save it as an XML file. Be sure to include the space after the “>” in “”. That’s your subtitle file!

Caveats:

Subtitle filesizes range from “large” to “ludicrous” – Skip Beat was a 178KB XML file. These files are unicode files with absolutely no non-ASCII content, so it is safe to convert it to UTF-8. I suggest using Notepad2 but it’s really up to you. You don’t have to do this at all, actually, but if you write your own XML to ASS converter, it’s slightly more convenient to work in UTF-8 than Unicode.

Then, there’s the conversion from XML to ASS. This task should be rather trivial, if you know how to code a basic parser; if not, you should be able to do it with a *lot* of replacement rules in Microsoft Word.

One of the reasons why some anime never makes it outside of Japan is because there’s not enough of an audience to even recoup the costs of translating(0) However, I know that there are so many great great fans out there that are willing to help if it means that others can enjoy it. So as part of our discussions with Japanese anime companies, we suggested that they allow CR users to help subtitle in return for giving credit to the fans!(1)

However, in order to translate and subtitle, we have to require that you agree to these terms because the only way we could get Japanese companies to agree was to ensure that they would have the rights they need to use the subtitles. 3. Ownership.

a. General. Crunchyroll and its licensors own all rights, title, and interest in and to the Crunchyroll Content (including any Licensed Content) including all intellectual property rights therein. The Crunchyroll Content is protected by United States copyright law and international treaties. You will not delete or in any manner alter the copyright, trademark, and other proprietary rights notices or markings appearing on Crunchyroll Content as delivered to you. Crunchyroll reserves all rights in the Crunchyroll Content not expressly granted to you in these Translation Terms subject to the underlying rights of its third party content partners.

b. Assignment. You acknowledge and agree that the entity noted in the credits of the Crunchyroll Content you access and/or download via the Site or Services (“Content Provider”) is a third party beneficiary of these Translation Terms. You acknowledge and agree that Crunchyroll will own all rights, title and interest in and to any Translated Content. You hereby assign, convey, and transfer and agree to assign, convey and transfer all, right, title and interest in and to any Translated Content and any intellectual property rights therein to Crunchyroll.(5)

c. Further Assurances. At Crunchyroll’s request, during and after the term of these Translation Terms, you will assist and cooperate with either party in all respects, and will execute documents, and will take such further acts reasonably requested by Crunchyroll to enable Crunchyroll to acquire, transfer, maintain, perfect and enforce its intellectual property rights and other legal protections for the Translated Content. You hereby appoint the officers of Crunchyroll as your attorney-in-fact to execute documents on your behalf for this limited purpose. You warrant that all so-called moral rights you may have in any Translated Content are hereby waived.(6) If for any reason a court of competent jurisdiction finds Section 2(b) herein to be unenforceable, then you hereby grant or will cause to be granted to Crunchyroll an exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, transferable, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, reproduce, modify, prepare derivative works based upon, distribute, sublicense, display, perform and transmit the Translated Content in any media formats and through any media channels.(7)

d. Related Rights. To the extent that you own or control (presently or in the future) any intellectual property or proprietary rights that block or interfere with the rights assigned to Crunchyroll under these Translation Terms (collectively, “Related Rights”), you hereby grant or will cause to be granted to Crunchyroll an non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, transferable, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to copy, reproduce, modify, create derivative works based upon, distribute, sublicense, display, perform and transmit any content or materials of any kind that are covered by such Related Rights, to the extent necessary to enable Crunchyroll to exercise all of the rights assigned or licensed to it under this Agreement.

Now just wait a minute. Please read 1 and 2.
The premise of 1 is that the Japanese anime companies will GRANT the right to produce derivative TRANSLATIONS to Crunchyroll users, and in return, the users will be given “credit”. Actually, the slimy part is that the companies see that they are giving fansubbers a right, and they expect to get something in return. The fansubbers don’t even know that fansubbing is in and of itself STRICTLY illegal (Further reading), so they think they’re doing the companies a favor and expect something from the companies. Not going to happen.

We ought to define “credit” here. From the fansubber’s point of view, they are creating an ‘original work.’ For an original work,one expects to have ownership and attribution of the work in question, to be guaranteed the integrity of the work, and the right to publish one’s work wherever they want.

The premise of 2 is that Crunchyroll will ensure that you get credit for the work on Crunchyroll’s own website or anywhere else they need to use it.

1 is thrown out the window in the Terms of Service: see ownership, attribution and integrity of work, and the right to publish the work wherever.

2 is completely goodwill, and I fail to see how the terms of service ensure that the fansubber will be given credit. Consider that nowhere in the document does the fansubber have any legal recourse should Crunchyroll decide to take/change/remove “credit”. Also, note that from 7, Crunchyroll is allowed to use the fansubber’s work as they see fit.

So what benefits does a fansubber have for submitting work to Crunchyroll? Only one: sanctioned, legal fansubbing! But the price to pay is the legal equivalent to selling your soul to the devil.
I’ve seen one other document resembling this (note that this does not imply that I read legal documents routinely), and it’s the Tokyopop Manga Pilot program, which is remarkably much worse because the artists are producing original work. ANN remarks on Manga Pilot program.

Reverse engineering the Crunchyroll subtitle DRM

Now I bet this is highly illegal, but I’m going to document my misadventures in decrypting the Crunchyroll subtitle format.

The crunchyroll video player downloads an encrypted XML file with every official soft-subtitled episode of anime. This XML file is the subtitles for the video in question. Inside the XML file there’s a ‘iv’ field and a ‘data’ field. The ‘iv’ field gives the decryption key (128 bits) and the data field contains the actual subtitle. Everything inside tags is base64 encoded. So I’ve un-base64′d everything and…

I have the key but don’t know the algorithm. The data portion is modulo 256, so a block cipher is suspected. I’ll try XORing but that seems too lame. Note: the file’s padded to modulo 256…

Next steps: decompile the SWF file and see what the hell they’re doing.

CrunchyRoll: The ex-Fansub Experiment

Note: I’ve fansubbed before. This means that the opinions expressed in this post may be rather biased.

While I’m not a big fan of Crunchyroll (hereafter referred to as CR) to begin with (strongly preferring fansubs) , I have to say that this is a HUGE step in the right direction, since it solves the two largest problems that viewers experience with legal anime now (which is mostly restricted to DVDs*1): immediate availability (1 hour after airing on CR), and the ability to watch the show legally, for free (like hulu, for example).

The biggest fear I have, actually, is that the official version won’t be as good as the fansubbed version. The fansub community has extremely high standards that CR must meet or surpass: karaoke, typesetting, excellent video quality*2, soft subtitles, seamless video overlays (for translation), and literal translation with cultural notes. If the for-pay episodes don’t live up to fansubs, it will forever taint CR’s reputation (especially since one must pay to see the best quality that CR has to deliver). The for-pay versions simply must replace fansubs for CR to achieve mindshare amongst viewers; otherwise, fansubs are free and cheaper!

*1 The quality of older streaming services was 320×240 low-quality MPEG-4 videos with subtitles (can you say “hard to read”?), released months after airing in Japan, costing $2-3 per episode. That’s just not acceptable.
*2 From what I can see now, CR’s “H.264 quality” is rather unimpressive. “720p quality” videos are actually darn good (they don’t seem to be processed, but they don’t need to since TV Tokyo provides the RAWs, eh?), though a little on the light side for bitrate (for an OP). Whether this means that the rest of the episode will be at a lower bitrate or the same high bitrate of the OP remains to be seen.

Retracted: though not quite as good as I’ve seen with fansubs (mind you, some of these encoders don’t just use better codecs, but also do some very slick RAW cleanup which I didn’t see in the 720p demo). This is with some experience as an encoder, and also watching current fansubs.

I’d say that the stream quality for H.264/HQ/LQ versions, which will be available as free downloads a week after airing, is rather sub-par. I’m normally not a stickler for quality but I think it’s just too crappy compared to the worst speedsubs (Dattebayo!) release.

I didn’t look at HQ or LQ quality since they’re not the best that CR would offer for free. But I looked at H.264 and 720p quality.

H.264 quality Technical info: Baseline H.264, 256kbit/sec; AAC LC 48KHz at 96kBit/sec.
The video resolution currently depends on the uploaded video, so I reserve judgment on resolution until I see an official release. However, since CR is advertising “480p” and “720p” for paying customers, I suspect the “h.264″ quality will be a fair bit smaller than ???x480. Perhaps 576×320 (marginal) or 480×272 (unacceptable)? May I also mention that hardsubs in low resolution video are hard to read?

720p quality (from demo) Technical info: 1280×720 Main/High profile H.264, 3MBit/sec; AAC LC 48KHz 125kBit/sec. This is a pretty respectable encode, but it is a bit low on the bitrate, especially for the OP, which naturally eats more bitrate than the rest of the episode. Also, not much processing has been done on the RAW. But since TV Tokyo’s providing the RAWs, it probably isn’t necessary.

From what I can see, the 720p version is acceptable quality for most of us fansubheads. What will make or break the deal, for fansub watchers, is therefore other features like karaoke, overlays, and translation. CrunchyRoll’s decision to go legit is interesting because it basically means that CrunchyRoll is graduating from one set of ‘shoes’, a borrowed pair of piracy and fansubbing shoes, to a completely different set of ‘shoes’, a legal pair shoes where TV Tokyo, Gonzo, etc. have played a role in crafting.*3 But the new ‘shoes’ are much bigger now, because money is now at stake, not just for the viewers but also for the businesses; Gonzo put 20% of itself in CrunchyRoll. With the plan to make available high-quality subtitled episodes one hour after airing, it is clear that CrunchyRoll is aiming straight towards the community of fansub viewers. Can CrunchyRoll fill its new big shoes and gain their acceptance, or will they fail like previous experiments have done in the past?

I would also like to note that not all English fansub viewers are in the United States. This might seem obvious, but from the number of rants I read that believe that the USA is the end-all-be-all of the foreign anime market, I must stress this point. I believe CrunchyRoll may have a harder time monetizing non-American markets. Also, CrunchyRoll’s region locking is stupid and retarded etc. but I think it’s more likely to be the idiotic Japanese media companies who are stuck in the past. Regions are so 1990s!

*3 I’ve never seen a company change its business model so drastically and survive with the same fervor it had before the change. Note that Youtube never really changed from its roots; it’s a hothouse of piracy that’s now policed by employees.

Fall 2008 Season written off

I’ve decided not to blog the rest of the Fall 2008 season, due to a combination of FAIL episodes from favorite series (I’m talking about CLANNAD and Toradora), and getting swamped with Real Life and schoolwork. (Err… and Fortune Summoners, which I promise to blog completely later.)

I had a two weekly anime roundup posts backlogged, but I don’t think it would make sense to post them given that I’m not going to finish. *sigh* ヽ(#`Д´)ﾉ

Other news: probably going to try to write a 10k-word visual novel over winter break; storyboard planning is in progress now. Ultimate goal is to write a 25k-word visual novel sometime in 2009.
